LAPIS LAZULI SCARAB
Revered by the Egyptians, the SCARAB was associated with their god, Khepri, who pushed the Sun across the sky until it disappeared each night, to reappear the following day.
The SCARAB Beetle thus became the symbol of rebirth.
--
Known as ‘Lajuart Riggi’ to the Afghans, the source of this lapis lazuli is ‘Sar-E-Sang, Badakshan’ Province in North East Afghanistan.
There are six mines in Afghanistan:
*This lapis comes from the fourth mine
Carved from a solid block, the high pyrites content is what gives it solidity, lending itself well to the ancient skill of making boxes, obelisks and of course, this SCARAB. The SCARAB weighs 3.931 kilograms (8lbs 10 oz)
is 7.25 inches (18cm) long and 5.5 inches (14cm) wide.
